Create a To-Do List
Now that you have a mover selected, you’ll want to create a to-do list to help you stay on track. If you are moving yourself and know when you will be moving, rent a truck now. The closer you get to your move date, the harder it might be to reserve one. Also on the list should be notifying important parties of your upcoming address change.
Time to Declutter
Ideally, you should start decluttering well in advance of your move. The more stuff you get rid of, the less stuff you will have to move. Start with the garage, as most people store items there that they may no longer need. Then go room by room. You can start packing non-essential items. You may be walking into a bare guest room, but you will appreciate the time you save as you get closer to your move-in date.
Give Notice
Approximately six weeks before you move, be sure to notify your employers, kids’ schools, utility companies and banks of your move. Put a change of address notice in at the post office so your mail will be delivered to your new address without interruption. If you are not moving far, you may be able to transfer your utilities to your new address without interrupting service. If you are changing doctors and vets, arrange for the transfer of medical records.
Continue Packing
When your moving date is about a month away, start packing less-used items such as toys your children want to keep but don’t play with often, out-of-season clothes, kitchenware you don’t use, etc. Begin using up your perishable food and cleaning supplies. Call your moving company or rental truck agency and confirm the details of your move.
Now It’s Crunch Time
Two weeks before the move you should start packing the rest of your items. Leave out essentials such as clothing, kids’ school supplies, dishes and utensils, pet necessities and anything else you can’t do without before the move. Make sure you label your boxes with the room the items belong in and what’s in them for easier unpacking. Arrange for pet or childcare on moving day if needed. Create a "first night" box with essentials for your new home. Do a deep clean of your old home.
It’s Moving Day!
Supervise your movers or begin packing your truck. Be sure you have all your valuable items and essential documents with you. Once everything is on the truck, do a final walk-through to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything. Wipe down surfaces, clean floors and do any other cleaning you might want to do.
After the Move
You made it. You are in your new home. Surrounded by boxes… If you packed an essentials box, unpack it, order pizza and set up the beds. Everything else can wait until morning. Once you are well rested, unpack essentials first. Check for damage to furniture and contact your moving company if there is an issue. Try not to do it all in one day. Take breaks, explore your new neighborhood and make friends before going back to unpacking more boxes.
